Brother Jx2517 Review

Brother Jx2517 is an affordable lightweight sewing machine. It is easy to use and beginner-friendly. Brother Jx2517 is great for the budget-conscious buyer. It’s a decent sewing machine at a reasonable price.

Brother Jx2517 sewing machine comes with 17 built-in stitches. You get options for utility and decorative stitches. There’s also a 4 step-buttonhole stitch style. That’s obviously nothing over-the-top. It is still good enough to see you through basic projects.

Is Brother Jx2517 the Right Sewing Machine for You?

Brother Jx2517 doesn’t come with too many bells and whistles. Nevertheless, Brother Jx2517 is a good machine for basic sewing and repair work. It is lightweight and portable. Hence, you can easily store it away when not in use.

As stated earlier, Brother Jx2517 comes with 17 built-in stitches. There are 4 presser foot attachments (buttonhole, button sewing, zipper, and zigzag foot). Again, this is nothing too fancy but will work well for basic sewing projects.

Who is This Sewing Machine for?

Brother Jx2517 is ideal for:

  • Beginners and newbies
  • People who do simple sewing and repair work
  • Those who want an uncomplicated easy-to-use machine
  • Someone on a restricted budget
  • Anyone who is on the lookout for a lightweight and portable machine
  • People who want a second machine for occasional use (like for sewing buttons or doing a zigzag stitch)

Who is This Sewing Machine NOT for?

Brother Jx2517 is not ideal for:

  • Professional and advanced sewers
  • Those who do heavy duty sewing
  • People who have trouble controlling the sewing speed with a foot pedal
  • Anyone who does a lot of craft projects that require a wide variety of decorative stitches
  • Someone who is in the market for a machine with high durability (this machine has a lot of flimsy plastic parts. Hence, it is not the most durable sewing machine out there)

Brother Jx2517 – An Overview

Brother Jx2517 is an ideal sewing machine for a beginner who is just getting started with sewing. The seasoned sewist might find it lacking in advanced features. However, it has everything one needs to get started with simple sewing projects.

The 17 built-in stitches provide an adequate variety of styles to choose from. The sewing speed is controlled through the foot pedal. You can achieve a maximum speed of 900 stitches per minute. That’s not bad at all for a machine in this price range!

Brother Jx2517 has a top drop-in bobbin system. Most people find this kind of a bobbin system to be much more convenient to use. The automatic bobbin winder allows you to load the bobbin easily.

The work area is lit by an LED bulb. It’s not very bright but still helps in keeping an eye on your stitches.

Brother Jx2517 is a low-price sewing machine. It has a decent number of features for a sewing machine in this price range. It offers good value-for-money.

However, I think if you are willing to spend a little more, then Brother XM2701 is a better deal. The price difference between the two machines is not that great.

Yet, Brother XM2701 has more built-in stitches and presser foot attachments. We’ll do a more thorough comparison of the two machines later on in this article.

Built-in Stitches

Brother Jx2517 comes with 17 built-in stitches. All stitch styles s are displayed on the front panel of the machine. You have to use the stitch selection dial to choose your desired stitch.

There are options for zigzag, satin, utility, and decorative stitches. You get only 1 style of four-step buttonhole style, so not much of a choice there.

You have to assess your needs to see if this could be a good number of stitches for you or not. It all depends upon the kind of projects you see yourself doing. For beginners and occasional sewers, these options would suffice.

Sewing Speed

It is possible to achieve a sewing speed of up to 900 stitches per minute. However, there is no speed control slider on the machine.

You have to control the sewing speed using the foot pedal. Brother Jx2517 reviews state that the foot pedal is responsive. It allows you to exert control over the sewing speed with precision.

Presser Foot Attachments

Brother Jx2517 comes with 4 presser foot attachments. The buttonhole foot is used for making buttonholes in 4 steps. The button sewing foot comes in handy when you want to attach buttons. The zipper foot is useful for sewing zippers.

The zigzag foot is the universal/all-purpose foot. It is your default option for most straight and zigzag stitches.

Reverse Stitch Lever

There is a reverse stitch lever on Brother Jx2517. It allows you to sew backwards. This is useful for securing seams and for making existing stitches stronger.

Brother Jx2517 Bobbin System

Brother Jx2517 employs a top drop-in bobbin system. This is much easier to use in comparison with a front-loading bobbin system.

The machine comes with 1 loaded bobbin (in white) and a few extras. The bobbin is easy to load. Instructions for the same are printed on top of the machine.

The bobbins that come with this Brother sewing machine are made of plastic. It should be possible to use metal bobbins if you care for that. Just make sure that they are the same size as the bobbins included with this machine.

Durability and Stability

It’s tough to get it all. This machine is decent for a beginner or someone who wants a second machine for occasional use. However, it is too lightweight to provide a perfectly stable work environment.

The presence of too many plastic parts also makes the overall durability questionable. With careful use and adequate care, it should still last you a while.

Buttonhole Maker

Buttonholes are sewn in 4 steps. For a lot of people, this could be a deal-breaker. Other machines in a similar price range offer the automatic one-step buttonhole feature.

The importance of this feature boils down to how often you will be making buttonholes.

LED-lit Work Area

There is an LED light above the needle. It’s not the brightest light. But I would say it’s good enough to help you keep track of your sewing. You can always add additional overhead lights for extra brightness.

Built-in Free-arm

This feature comes in handy when you are sewing cylindrical objects. For example, cuffs, sleeves, legs, etc.

How Does it Compare?

Let us see how Brother Jx2517 fairs in comparison with its peers.

Brother XM2701

The price difference between Brother XM2701 and Brother Jx2517 is not that great. However, Brother XM2701 offers better features and functionalities. It has 27 built-in stitches. There are options for basic, quilting, and decorative stitches.

Brother XM2701 also has 6 presser foot attachments (button sewing, buttonhole, blind stitch, zipper, narrow hem, and zigzag foot). The automatic one-step buttonhole feature further adds to the appeal of the machine.

Both machines are easy to use and lightweight. The presence of the above-mentioned features makes Brother XM2701 a better deal than Brother Jx2517.

Singer 4423

If you are willing to stretch your budget a little more, then I would suggest buying Singer 4423. This is an excellent sewing machine for beginners. It is easy to use and offers tremendous versatility.

Singer 4423 is made mostly out of metal parts. It is, therefore, a lot more durable than Brother Jx2517. However, the machine is still lightweight enough to be portable.

Singer 4423 has 23 built-in stitches and can sew up to 1100 stitches per minute. It has a lot of features that Brother Jx2517 doesn’t have. For instance, you can customize the stitch length and width on it. Singer 4423 has the coveted one-step buttonhole feature. The presser foot pressure is also adjustable.

If you want more features and higher durability, then go with Singer 4423. You can read my detailed review of Singer 4423 here.

Brother CS6000i

Brother CS6000i is an affordable and easy-to-use computerized sewing machine. It is feature-packed and versatile. You get 60 built-in stitches with 7 styles of one-step automatic buttonhole.

The machine comes with 8 presser foot attachments (overcasting, monogramming, walking, zipper, zigzag, blind stitch, buttonhole, button sewing, and spring action quilting foot).

Unlike Brother XM2701, Brother CS6000i has a speed control slider. You can set your desired speed and let the machine sew consistently at that pace. The maximum sewing speed goes up to 850 stitches per minute.

People who are comfortable with technology will enjoy working on this sewing machine. Computerized sewing machines generally sew more accurately than mechanical ones.

Other additional features on Brother CS6000i include a wide table for maneuvering large projects and an automatic needle threader.

Brother CS6000i can be a great option for you if you want a sewing machine that has tons of features. It is also a wonderful choice if you are uncomfortable with the foot pedal. In that case, its automatic speed control slide will be a lifesaver for you.
