Brother XR9550PRW Review

Brother XR9550PRW is an easy-to-use computerized sewing machine. It is affordable and feature-rich. The machine comes with 110 built-in stitches. This includes 8 styles of one-step buttonholes. You also have a lot of options for heirloom, decorative, and utility stitches.

You get 8 presser foot attachments with Brother XR9550PRW. They support you in doing a variety of sewing, quilting, crafts, and home decor projects.

Is Brother XR9550PRW the Right Sewing Machine for You?

Brother XR9550PRW is an excellent sewing machine for beginners. It is also a great choice for someone who is looking for a decent sewing machine for basic sewing and repair work.

For advanced sewers, this could be a good second machine. I would not recommend this as a primary machine for an advanced sewer. This isn’t an ideal machine for heavy daily usage. Brother XR9550PRW might not have the durability to withstand that level of usage.

Who is This Sewing Machine for?

Brother XR9550PRW is ideal for:

  • Beginners and newbies
  • Tech-savvy sewing enthusiasts
  • Someone who wants a decent computerized sewing machine at an affordable price
  • Those who do basic sewing and repair work
  • Advanced sewers looking for a portable and lightweight second machine
  • Anyone who wants an easy-to-use feature-rich sewing machine

Who is This Sewing Machine Not for?

XR9550PRW is not ideal for:

  • Professional and advanced sewers (they would want to have it as a secondary and not as a primary machine)
  • Heavy duty sewers and those who deal with thick fabrics regularly
  • Those who are petrified of technology and not willing to learn the nuances of a computerized sewing machine
  • People who need a machine for making thick quilts (it’s possible to make thinner quilts on XR9550PRW)
  • Someone who is looking to make a long-term investment in a durable machine (this machine is fragile and might not last too long)

Brother XR9550PRW – An Overview

Brother XR9550PRW is a beginner-friendly easy-to-use sewing machine. The large number of stitch styles allow you to play with your creativity. You can view and select the stitches on the large LCD screen.

The machine sews smoothly. However, it is not the quietest machine to use. Some users find it a tad too noisy for their taste.

The bobbin is easy to load and set up. The wide extension table makes it easy to maneuver quilts and other large projects.

I’ll give this machine 5 stars for ease-of-use. It is also lightweight and portable. This implies 2 things. One, you can easily store it away when not in use or carry it with you whenever needed. Two, it’s not a machine with high durability. So it might not last you as long as other machines can.

Brother XR9550PRW – In-Depth Review

  • 8 styles of one-step buttonhole
  • Large LCD screen
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Wide extension table
  • Adjustable stitch length and width
  • Speed control slider
  • Top drop-in bobbin system
  • Portable and lightweight

Built-in Stitches and Sewing Quality

Brother XR9550PRW features 110 built-in stitches. This includes decorative, heirloom, alphanumeric, and utility stitches. You also have options for 8 styles of automatic one-step buttonhole. You can use the stitch-selector push-button to view the stitch choices on the LCD screen. You can modify the settings for your chosen stitch style on the LCD screen itself.

With such a wide selection of stitches, you can engage in home décor and other creative/crafty projects. The stitching quality is also good. However, you can’t expect it to be as perfect as what you would get with a high-end sewing machine. We get what we pay for. I can assure you, in this price range, XR9550PRW offers excellent value-for-money.

Brother XR9550PRW works best with easy to sew fabrics like cotton. The sewing quality is slightly less impressive when you are using thicker fabrics. But if you are a beginner, you might not be able to tell the difference.

There is a reference guide at the back of the instructions manual. It tells you which stitches work best with different types of fabric.

This machine is especially good for making quality buttonholes.

Ease of Use

Brother XR9550PRW is super easy to set up and use. The machine is intuitive and easy enough for a beginner to figure out. The instructions manual is also helpful.

I would highly recommend going through the instructions video as well. Do check it out below.

Presser Foot Attachments

Brother XR9550PRW comes with 8 presser foot attachments (zigzag, zipper, buttonhole, overcasting, button sewing, monogramming, blind stitch, and quilting foot).

The zigzag foot is the universal or standard foot used for most utility sewing projects. The buttonhole foot helps you in making even-sized buttonholes. The monogramming foot has a transparent window to keep an eye on the stitches you are making. This foot is helpful when you are doing heirloom or decorative stitches. It is also used for smocking and hemming.

For a beginner or hobby sewer, these presser foot attachments should be more than enough.

Sewing Speed

Brother XR9550PRW has a speed control slider with 3 settings – slow, medium and fast. The machine will sew consistently at that particular speed. It doesn’t matter how much pressure you are applying on the foot pedal.

The foot pedal can be used to start and stop sewing or you can use the start/stop button for this purpose.

Bobbin System

Brother XR9550PRW utilizes a top drop-in bobbin system. The company recommends using the bobbins that are meant specifically for this machine. Using any other bobbin might injure your sewing machine.

The bobbin is easy to wind and load. The illustrations on the top of the machine are very helpful. The bobbin cover is transparent. Hence, you can easily monitor the thread supply.

Automatic Needle Threader

The automatic needle threader on Brother XR9550PRW is pretty easy to use. Most users can get it to work without any hiccups. It’s basically a large area through which you can pass the thread and then pull it through the machine needle.

Stability and Durability

Brother XR9550PRW is a lightweight machine. Hence, it is not going to offer you the most stable sewing experience if you are planning to sew heavy duty fabrics. However, the machine is reasonably durable.

I would not recommend it for heavy duty work per se. That being said, one user has reported sewing 4 layers of duck cloth canvas without any issues. If you are keen on doing heavy duty sewing, then just make sure that you are using the correct needle. Also, be sure to get the tension right.

Since Brother XR9550PRW does come with a quilting foot and a wide table, a lot of users make quilts on it. However, it is suitable only for small-sized thinner quilts. The throat area is also not large enough for maneuvering bigger size quilts.

I would not rate Brother XR9550PRW very high on durability. It’s not the right machine for you if you are looking to buy something for the long-term. If you want a basic machine with a decent amount of features, then Brother XR9550PRW is the right one for you. It might last you a reasonable amount of time.
